OS/2 now has a native OS/2 graphical user interface.
This component provides complete on-access scanning
protection for OS/2 sessions.
3. This version of VirusScan combines its new VShield
on-access scanning component with an updated on-demand
scanner to provide you with complete and powerful
anti-virus protection for your OS/2 desktop.
4. The VShield component now has the ability to remove
viruses from infected files.
5. VShield adds the ability to perform on-access scan
operations on floppy disk boot sectors.
* NEW VIRUSES DETECTED *
****IMPORTANT NOTE****
The 4009 .DAT files included with this release of VirusScan
for OS/2 are compatible with Network Associates anti-virus
products that use scan engine versions 4.0.xx only. These
.DAT files will NOT work with v3.x or v2.x scan engines.
Network Associates recommends that you upgrade to the latest
version of the v4.x.xx engine for optimal virus detection
and repair.
****
* NEW DETECTIONS *

KNOWN ISSUES
1. To view the VirusScan log file, you must open it in a
separate text editor that can read standard ASCII
text.
2. If you are running a DOS or Windows session within OS/2,
VShield will not scan some network drives, including
Novell NetWare drives. To scan these drives over the
network, you must return to the OS/2 graphical user
interface or command line.
3. If you are running OS/2 Warp 3 and have a full-screen
DOS, full-screen OS/2 command-prompt, or full-screen
Win-OS/2 session running when VShield detects a virus,
VShield will not display an alert message. It will,
however, take the action you designated to respond to
the virus.
____________
INSTALLATION
* INSTALLING VIRUSSCAN FOR OS/2 *
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
VirusScan for OS/2 runs under both Warp 3 and Warp 4. The
system requirements below list the particular configurations
necessary to run VirusScan under each OS/2 version.
To install and run VirusScan for OS/2 on Warp 4 systems,
your computer must:
* Run OS/2 Warp 4 with the Security Enabling System
component installed and enabled. You can install the
Security Enabling System as an Optional System
Component during your OS/2 installation. You can then
enable SES with the VirusScan for OS/2 installation
utility.
Once you have SES installed, you can use the VirusScan
for OS/2 installation utility to enable it. Note that
to use the installation utility to enable SES, you must
also choose to install VShield. If you already have SES
installed and enabled on your system, you can choose to
install VShield without enabling SES.
Alternatively, you can enable SES separately by editing
your system's CONFIG.SYS file. Consult "Enabling SES"
later in this file to learn how to enable SES yourself.
WARNING: You MUST have SES installed on your system in
order for the installation utility to enable it
properly. If you do not have SES installed, and you
try to enable it during installation, the installation
utility will prevent Program Manager from running and
prevent your system from completing its startup. The
installation utility CANNOT check for the presence of
SES software on your computer.
* Have OS/2 FixPak 4 installed.
To install and run VirusScan's VShield component on Warp 3
systems, your computer must:
* Run OS/2 Warp 3 with the Security Enabling System (SES)
component installed and enabled. The SES component, in
turn, requires OS/2 FixPak 17 (XR_W017). You can obtain
both SES and FixPak 17 from IBM, or download it from
the IBM website at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com.
NOTE: If you have FixPak versions later than FixPak 17
installed, you must remove them, install FixPak 17 and
the SES FixPak, then reinstall later-version FixPaks
in order to correctly enable SES.
Once you have SES installed, you can use the VirusScan
for OS/2 installation utility to enable it. Note that
to use the installation utility to enable SES, you must
also choose to install VShield. If you already have SES
installed and enabled on your system, you can choose to
install VShield without enabling SES.
Alternatively, consult "Enabling SES" later in this file
to learn how to enable SES yourself.
* Have OS/2 FixPak 26 or later installed. You must install
FixPak 26 or any later FixPak after you install the SES
component. You can obtain the necessary FixPak software
from IBM, or download it from the IBM website at
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com.
ENABLING SES
Because VirusScan's VShield component relies on IBM's SES
component to give it the complete file access it needs to
check your system for viruses, you must enable SES before
you install VShield. IBM has versions of SES available
for use with OS/2 Warp 3 and OS/2 Warp 4.
If you do not already have SES enabled, you can have
the VirusScan for OS/2 installation utility enable it
for you during installation. See "Installation Steps"
later in this file for details.
To enable SES yourself, you must add configuration data to
your CONFIG.SYS file. CNFGSES.TXT, a separate text file
included with this VirusScan distribution, is a model
CONFIG.SYS file from which you can copy the necessary
configuration data. Once you edit your CONFIG.SYS file,
restart your computer to load the necessary configuration
data.
INSTALLATION STEPS
To install this version of VirusScan for OS/2, follow these
steps:
1. Verify that you have installed and enabled the OS/2
Security Enabling System component on your computer.
To learn how to do so, see the "Enabling SES" earlier
in this file.
2. Create a temporary directory on your hard disk or on a
disk available on your network, then download the
VirusScan for OS/2 installation files from the Network
Associates website to the directory you created.
Next, use a utility that can extract files from .zip
archives to uncompress the files you downloaded into
the directory you created.
3. Locate the INSTALL.EXE file in your temporary directory,
then double-click it to begin your installation.
4. Follow the instructions shown in the installation
panels to continue. You can choose to install the
VirusScan on-demand scanner, the VShield on-access
scanner, or both.
NOTE: If you choose to install VShield, you MUST
have SES installed on your computer for it to work
properly. If you have SES installed on your system,
but not enabled, you should choose to enable SES
through the VirusScan installation utility.
WARNING: If you choose to enable SES but do not have
it already installed on your computer, the
installation utility will prevent Program Manager
from running and your system from completing its
startup. The installation utility CANNOT check for
the presence of SES software on your computer. Be
sure you have followed all of the steps shown in the
previous sections before you continue with your
installation.
5. When you finish your installation, restart your
computer.

* TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort
by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to implement one
standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus
installations.
To test your installation, copy the following line into its
own file, then save the file with the name EICAR.COM.
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
The file size will be 69 or 70 bytes.
Next, start your anti-virus software and allow it to scan
the directory that contains EICAR.COM. When your software
scans this file, it will report finding the
EICAR virus.
Note that this file is NOT A VIRUS. Delete the file
when you have finished testing your installation to
avoid alarming unsuspecting users.
* UNINSTALLING VIRUSSCAN FOR OS/2 *
To remove VirusScan for OS/2 from your computer, follow
these steps:
1. Locate and open the VirusScan folder on your computer.
By default, the VirusScan installation utility places
this folder on the OS/2 desktop.
2. Double-click the VirusScan Uninstaller program icon
to open it.
The Uninstaller window appears.
3. Choose Delete from the Action menu.
A dialog box appears, where you can choose the
components you want to remove.
4. Click Select All to choose all VirusScan components.
5. Click Delete to remove all VirusScan components, then
confirm your action when the utility prompts you to so
so.
The uninstaller will remove each VirusScan component
and delete the VirusScan folder from your OS/2 desktop.
6. Restart your computer to complete the uninstallation
and return your computer to its previous state.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: I've installed VShield, but I don't see an icon on my
desktop? How do I configure the program?
A: VShield for OS/2 runs in a minimized state. By default,
programs that run in this state in OS/2 appear in the
Minimized Window viewer, not on the desktop. To see the
VShield icon, first open the OS/2 System icon, then
open the Minimized Window Viewer. You can then start
the VShield configuration utility to choose your
scanning and other options.
To configure your OS/2 system to display minimized
programs as icons on your desktop, you must change
your system setup. To do so, open the System Setup
icon, then open the System icon.
In Warp 3 systems, this opens the System - Settings
dialog box. In Warp 4 systems, this opens the System -

____________
INSTALLATION
To install VirusScan anti-virus software for Windows 95,
Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps:
1. Insert the floppy disk or compact disc with your copy
of the VirusScan software into your floppy disk drive
or CD-ROM drive.
2. Click Start in the Windows taskbar, then choose Run.
3. To start the installation utility from a floppy disk,
type x:\setup.exe in the Run dialog box that appears.
Substitute the letter that corresponds to your floppy
drive for the x: shown above.
To start the installation utility from a CD-ROM disc,
type the complete path for the installation directory
in the Run dialog box. The paths for each VirusScan
version are:
-For VirusScan anti-virus software for Windows 95 and
Windows 98, type
x:\win95\setup.exe
-For VirusScan anti-virus software for Windows NT 4.0,
type
x:\winnt\setup.exe
In each case, subsitute the letter that corresponds to
your CD-ROM drive for the x: shown above.
4. Click OK to continue.
The VirusScan installation wizard will start. Follow
the instructions shown on each wizard panel to choose
the VirusScan options you want.
5. When you finish your installation, restart your
computer.
To install VirusScan anti-virus software for Windows 3.1x
and the VirusScan Service Pack, follow these steps:
1. Insert the floppy disk or compact disc with your copy
of the VirusScan software into your floppy disk drive
or CD-ROM drive.
2. Start Program Manager, then choose Run from the File
menu.
The path for the VirusScan
software for Windows 3.1x is
x:\win\setup.exe
Be sure to subsitute the letter that corresponds to
your CD-ROM drive for the x: shown above.
4. Click OK to continue.
The VirusScan installation wizard will start. Follow
the instructions shown on each wizard panel to choose
the VirusScan options you want.
5. When you finish your installation, restart your
computer.
6. To install the VirusScan Service Pack, complete Steps
1 through 5 for the initial VirusScan installation,
then repeat Steps 2 though 5 to install the Service
Pack. In Step 3, however, substitute this line in
the Run dialog box:
x:\win\srvpack1\setup.exe
Again, x: represents the drive letter for your CD-ROM
drive. Next, continue with the rest of the steps
outlined above.
To install VirusScan Command Line anti-virus software,
follow these steps:
1. Insert the floppy disk or compact disc with your copy
of the VirusScan software into your floppy disk drive
or CD-ROM drive.
2. Create a program directory on your hard disk for the
VirusScan Command Line software.
2. Change your command line prompt to point to the CMD
directory on the drive that contains the VirusScan
installation files or, if you are installing VirusScan
Command line software from floppy disks, simply change
to your floppy drive.
3. Copy all of the files from the directory on the CD-ROM
disc or from the floppy disk to the VirusScan Command
Line directory you created.
4. To have the VShield scanner start as soon as your
computer starts, add x:\vshield.exe /<options> to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Here, x: designates the path to the VirusScan Command
Line files you copied, and <options> represents the
VShield options you want the program to use as it
runs. For complete virus protection, Network
Associates recommends starting VShield with the
/ANYACCESS switch.
For more information, consult the VirusScan Command
Line User's Guide.
To install VirusScan anti-virus software for the IBM OS/2
operating system, follow these steps:
1. Insert the floppy disk or compact disc with your copy
of the VirusScan software into your floppy disk drive
or CD-ROM drive.
2. Start a DOS session.
3. Change your command line prompt to point to the OS2
directory on the drive that contains the VirusScan
installation files or, if you are installing the
VirusScan software for OS/2 from floppy disks, simply
change to your floppy drive.
4. Type INSTALL.CMD at the command prompt, then press
ENTER.
The VirusScan application will begin scanning your hard
disk for infected files.
5. When the application completes its scanning operation,
you'll see the VirusScan welcome screen. Follow
the instructions that appear in order to complete
your installation.
The installation script creates a directory to
store the VirusScan program files on your hard disk,
then adds the directory to the path statement in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If the VirusScan version
you installed uses the VShield on-access virus
scanner, the installation script also adds two lines
to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file that start the VShield
scanner whenever you start your computer. For
complete virus protection, Network Associates
recommends starting the VShield scanner with the
/ANYACCESS option.
To install the SecureCast* distribution utility on systems
that run Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0, follow
these steps:
1. Insert the floppy disk or compact disc with your copy
of the SecureCast software into your floppy disk drive
or CD-ROM drive.
2. Click Start in the Windows taskbar, then choose Run.
3. Type x:\securcst\bwclient.exe in the Run dialog box to
start the installation utility. Substitute the letter
of your CD-ROM drive for the x: designation.
4. Click OK to continue.
The SecureCast installation wizard will start. Follow
the instructions shown on each wizard panel to choose
the options you want.
5. When you finish your installation, restart your
computer.

____________
NEW FEATURES
1. VirusScan now features a new command-line option,
/LONGYEAR. When this option is used in a VirusScan
command, dates will be reported in the on-screen
display and in any generated reports with four-digit
years (i.e. 1997). When the /LONGYEAR option is not
used, years will appear in two-digit format (i.e. 97).
2. VirusScan for OS/2 continues to provide the exceptional
virus detection rates and fast scanning performance of
the 3.0 engine series.
The VirusScan 3.0 series offers users maximum defense
against the newest threats to data. VirusScan's 3.0
series detects all virus types including Word and Excel
macros, boot-sector infections, file, multi-partite,
stealth, polymorphic and encrypted viruses.
3. New command-line option for cleaning macros. Use the
new /CLEANDOCALL switch to clean all macros from
infected MSWord and MSOffice documents including the
the LAROUX Excel macro virus from .XLS files.
4. New command-line option for scanning specific file
sizes. Use the new /MAXFILESIZE xxx.x (where xxx.x is,
specify file size in megabytes) switch to scan only
files with sizes under the amount specified.
* ENHANCEMENTS *
1. Enhanced command-line option for cleaning diskette boot
sectors. Use the /FORCE switch to clean infected boot
sectors of diskettes. The /FORCE switch can be used
even when a remover is not yet available for the boot
sector virus.
* NEW VIRUSES DETECTED *
This DAT file detects the following 198 new viruses.
Locations that have experienced particular problems
with specific viruses are also identified.

____________
KNOWN ISSUES
1. The VShield DOS TSR (on-access scanning) invoked
during a WIN-OS/2 session will not display the
prompting notification screen due to a WIN-OS/2
display incompatibility.
2. This DAT file, 3008a, is compatible with VirusScan's
v3.0 engines only. This DAT file is not intended for
use with the VirusScan v2.5x engine series.
____________
INSTALLATION
* INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
Take one of the following steps depending on which
version of VirusScan for OS/2 you want to install:
1. For the installable version of VirusScan for OS/2,
take these steps:
a. Execute the INSTALL.CMD program.
b. Follow the on-screen instructions.
By default, McAfee's installation program makes
a directory on the hard disk drive named
C:\MCAFEE\OS2SCAN and copies the program files
to that directory.
The installation script also adds the directory
to the path statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
and adds one line to the file that references the
VShield program to provide on-access virus protec-
tion. For the most complete virus protection, McAfee
recommends using the /ANYACCESS switch.
or
2. For the non-installable version of VirusScan for
OS/2, take these installation steps:
a. Make a directory on your hard disk drive.
b. Copy the files to that directory.
c. Add that directory to the path statement in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
* PRIMARY PROGRAM FILES FOR VIRUSSCAN FOR OS/2 *
Files located in the Install directory:
=======================================
OS2SCAN.EXE = VirusScan for OS/2 program
CLEAN.DAT = Virus clean definition data
NAMES.DAT = Virus names definition data
SCAN.DAT = Virus scan definition data
OS2VAL.EXE = McAfee OS/2 file validation program
README.1ST = License and registration information
PACKING.LST = Packing list
WHATSNEW.TXT = What's New document
PH_OS2PL.EXE = OS/2 process monitoring daemon
RESELLER.TXT = McAfee authorized resellers
* TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort
by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up
with one standard by which customers can verify their
anti-virus installations.
To test your installation, copy the following line into its
own file and name it EICAR.COM.
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
When done, you will have a 69- or 70-byte file.
When VirusScan is applied to this file, SCAN will report
finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
users often have the need to test that their installations
function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the
European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has
adopted this standard to facilitate this need.
Please delete the file when installation testing is
completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily
alarmed.
* UNINSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
1. Execute VSHIELD/REMOVE to remove VShield from
memory, then remove the files from your hard disk
drive and remove any lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file that reference VShield. If an error message is
displayed indicating that VShield cannot be removed
from memory, take the next step.
2. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and remove the lines that
reference VShield, then reboot your system. Upon
restarting your system, VShield will not be loaded
into memory and you can remove the files from your
hard disk drive.
Note: If the files are removed from your hard disk
drive prior to removing VShield from memory, an
error message will be displayed until you remove
VShield from memory or restart your system.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Regularly updated lists of frequently asked questions
about McAfee products also are available on McAfee's
BBS, website, and CompuServe and AOL forums.
Q: How do I enable McAfee's centralized alerting and
reporting option?
A: VirusScan now supports centralized alerting and report-
ing to a remote NetWare or Windows NT server running
NetShield for Windows NT v2.5.3 or NetShield for NetWare
v2.3.3. To set up this option on your VirusScan client,
use the /ALERTPATH <directory> option, where the
<directory> is the path to the remote NetWare volume or
NT directory. From this directory, NetShield can broad-
cast or compile the alerts and reports according to its
established configuration.
NOTE: The client must have write access to this
<directory> location and the directory must contain
the NetShield-supplied CENTALRT.TXT file.
To send a complete alerting file that identifies the
system and user, establish the following environment
variables, or add them to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file for
DOS and CONFIG.SYS for OS/2.
Set COMPUTERNAME=<name of computer>
Set USERNAME=<user name>
The alert file sent to the server is an .alr text
file. Upon receipt of the alert file, NetShield NT
or NetShield for NetWare sends an alert message to
an administrator and/or appropriate personnel.
Q: I have created my own DOS Emergency diskette, how
can I optimize it's performance?
A: For optimal performance, create a CONFIG.SYS file on
the boot diskette and add the following lines:
[CONFIG.SYS]
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
Also, add the HIMEM.SYS file from the DOS directory
to the boot diskette.
Note: For detailed instructions on creating an Emergency
diskette, refer to the instructions outlined in your
online documentation.
Q: Does VirusScan for OS/2 detect Word Macro viruses?
A: Yes, it detects Macro viruses with the same
accuracy as McAfee's other anti-virus software.
Q. Is there a VShield program that works in OS/2?
A: There is no constant TSR-type protection available
in OS/2. Included in the package is the
DOS/Windows version of VShield, but it is only
active while the system is running a DOS or Windows
session.
Q: Is there a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for
VirusScan for OS/2?
A: No. There is no GUI. OS/2 is a command line
controlled product only.
Q: Can I update VirusScan's data files to detect
new viruses?
A: Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
updated VirusScan data files from the McAfee Web
Site, BBS, or other online resources. To download
from the McAfee Web Site, follow these steps:
1. Go to the McAfee Web Site (http://www.mcafee.com).
2. Select Update DAT File in the left hand column
or frame.
3. Scroll down, and click Update Your DAT Files to
update your virus definition files.
4. Data file updates are stored in a compressed form
to reduce transmission time. Unzip the files into
a temporary directory, then copy the files to the
appropriate directory, replacing your old files.
5. Before performing any scans, shut down your
computer, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
If you need additional assistance with downloading,
contact McAfee Download Support at (408) 988-3832.
