Amphetamine v. 1.1r1 (17/8/2026, Martin Iturbide) Readme/What's new
# Amphetamine for ArcaOS/OS2 Amphetamine is a Jump'n'Run game with unique visual effects, originally created by Jonas Spillmann. This is the ArcaOS/OS2 port based on the SDL Unix version (0.8.10) maintained by Lukas Loehrer. ## Version **1.1** — ArcaOS/OS2 SDL2 port ## Requirements - ArcaOS 5.x or OS/2 Warp 4.5+ - SDL2 (`SDL2.dll`) - SDL2_mixer (`SDL2_mixer.dll`) ## Controls | Key | Action | |-----|--------| | Left / Right arrow | Move | | Left Ctrl | Fire | | Space | Jump | | Tab | Action (press buttons) | | ESC | Menu | | Alt+Enter | Toggle fullscreen | You can customize controls by editing `data/user.conf`. Key values must be SDL2 keycodes. Common SDL2 keycodes for reference: | Key | SDL2 Keycode | |-----|-------------| | Left arrow | 1073741904 | | Right arrow | 1073741903 | | Left Ctrl | 1073742048 | | Space | 32 | | Tab | 9 | ## Running the Game Copy `amph.exe`, the `data/` folder, `SDL2.dll`, and `SDL2_mixer.dll` to the same directory, then run: ``` amph.exe ``` The game starts in a 1024×768 window. The internal rendering resolution is always 640×480 and is scaled up automatically — no loss of game logic at higher window sizes. ## Gameplay Physics and game constants are controlled by `data/amph.conf`. Adjust values at the top of that file if the game feels too fast or too slow on your hardware. ## Building from Source Requires GCC 9.2 (EMX/InnoTekLIBC) and `sdl2-config` on the build path. ``` make -f makefile.os2 clean make -f makefile.os2 ``` Or using the provided compile script: ``` compile clean compile ``` ## License GNU General Public License (GPL). See `LICENSE` and `doc/COPYING` for details. --- ## Version History ### 1.1 — ArcaOS/OS2 SDL2 port (2026) First ArcaOS/OS2 release. Changes from the original SDL1 Unix version (0.8.10): **Platform** - Ported from SDL1 to SDL2 (rendering, input, audio) - Build system: `makefile.os2` using GCC 9.2 / EMX / InnoTekLIBC - EMXOMFLD linker integration (`WLINK`) **Display** - Default window resolution changed to 1024×768 - `SDL_RenderSetLogicalSize` keeps game rendering at native 640×480 — scales to any window size while preserving the correct 4:3 aspect ratio - Alt+Enter toggles fullscreen (`SDL_WINDOW_FULLSCREEN_DESKTOP`) **Sound** - Sound system replaced with SDL2_mixer (`Mix_PlayChannel`, `Mix_LoadWAV`) - Distance-based volume attenuation preserved - Per-channel volume applied after play to support simultaneous instances of the same sound **Input** - Key configuration (`data/user.conf`) updated to SDL2 keycodes - `tConfigData` key fields widened from `short` to `int` to hold SDL2 extended keycodes (arrow keys, modifier keys use values > 32767) **Bug fixes from original** - Added `virtual` destructors to `CThing`, `CShape`, `CElement`, `CWeapon` and derived classes, fixing the long-standing crash on level transitions described in `doc/BUGS` - Fixed `ProcessKeyStrokes()` return type (`short` → `int`) to correctly handle SDL2 key constants that overflow a 16-bit integer - Fixed data directory path: game data is loaded from `data/` relative to the executable - Numerous GCC 9.2 `-Wall` warnings resolved across all source files ### 0.8.10 — Original SDL1 Unix version (2002) - Fixed bug where monsters froze after playing a while - Endianness autodetected via `SDL_BYTEORDER` - Minor bugfixes ### Earlier releases See `doc/NEWS` and `doc/ChangeLog` for the full history of the original Unix/SDL1 releases (0.8.1 through 0.8.10, 1999–2002). --- ## Known Issues - Clipping sometimes fails — the player or monsters may pass through walls or get stuck - Flying monsters occasionally get stuck in walls or at the top of the screen ## Authors - **Jonas Spillmann** — original game - **Lukas Loehrer** — Unix/SDL1 port - **Andrey Vasilkin** — ArcaOS/OS2 SDL1 port - **Martin Iturbide** — ArcaOS/OS2 SDL2 port ## Links - https://github.com/OS2World/GAME-SDL-ACTION-Amphetamine
