SHORT DESCRIPTION:
==================
ScreenSaver is an easy-to-use 32-bit screen saver for OS/2.
When ScreenSaver is started, it monitors your keyboard and mouse activity
in the backgound. If there has not been any activity for some time, the saver
becomes active. It stays active until the mouse is moved or clicked or a key
is pressed. You can set various options by double clicking ScreenSaver in the
window list (press Ctrl+Esc to show the window list). If you want to quit
ScreenSaver, press the "Exit ScreenSaver" button in the configuration panel.
ScreenSaver has the advantage of low memory consumption and very low CPU usage
- this means virtually no performance impact on your normal work.
ScreenSaver has a very modular structure: It searches its directory for saver
modules and selects a module randomly when the saver becomes active. Therefore
it is very easy to extend ScreenSaver by just copying new saver modules to its
directory.
There is password protection similar to the OS/2 lockup feature. For default
password, see online help. The password is case-sensitive.
There is DPMS support for "Green" monitors.
New in version 2.3 is support for DOS fullscreen sessions.
In version 2.2, there is support for Win-OS/2 fullscreen sessions.
It is possible to use Deskpic modules with ScreenSaver. Just copy them
to the ScreenSaver directory.
Sample source code for do-it-yourself saver modules comes with the
distribution; see the online help topic "Creating new saver modules"
for information on how to do create your own modules.
Even for people who don't know anything about programming it is possible to
create their own saver modules; see the online help topic "Creating bitmap
saver modules" for more information.
For more information on this program, please refer to the online help.
INSTALLATION:
=============
Unpack the file SSAVER26.ZIP into some directory on your hard disk (I guess
you have done that already since you are reading this file).
Use the program INSTALL.EXE to continue installation.
If you already have installed an earlier version of ScreenSaver, just run
INSTALL.EXE to continue installation.
Network installations: read the online help topic on CID in the installation
program.
To remove ScreenSaver from your system, see online help topic
"Uninstalling ScreenSaver".
ScreenSaver was tested on OS/2 2.1, OS/2 2.11 and OS/2 Warp Version 3;
it is likely to work with OS/2 2.0, too. Monitoring of fullscreen sessions
works only for OS/2 2.1 or higher.
KNOWN BUGS:
===========
A few users have reported problems with some Deskpic modules. If a Deskpic
module crashes on your system, delete the corresponding DSS file.
There was a problem reported that the mouse gets stuck when using some OS/2
fullscreen applications when "fullscreen monitoring" is enabled. If this
happens, please disable fullscreen monitoring. I am working on a solution.
(I know of problems with the applications Hyperaccess/2 and ADU).

KURZER ÜBERBLICK:
=================
INSTALLATION:
=============
Hilfethema "ScreenSaver entfernen".
ScreenSaver wurde getestet mit OS/2 2.1, OS/2 2.11 und OS/2 Warp Version 3;
mit OS/2 2.0 sollte es keine Probleme geben, wurde aber nicht getestet.
Überwachung von OS/2-Gesamtbild-Sitzungen funktioniert erst ab OS/2 2.1
BEKANNTE PROBLEME:
==================
Manche Benutzer haben Probleme mit bestimmten Deskpic-Modulen. Wenn ein
Deskpic-Modul auf Ihrem System abstürzt, löschen Sie einfach die entsprechende
*.DSS-Datei.

ScreenSaver v. 0.1 (12/1/1994, Siegfried Hanisch) | Readme/What's new |
ssmzzz release 0.1
------------------
section one: useless information
--------------------------------
These are .SSM files designed for the excellent OS/2 screen saver
"ScreenSaver" by Siegfried Hanisch. They have been tested under
version 1.1 only. Each subsequent release that I make will add
more screen saver modules, and, should the need arise (which it
undoubtedly will), fix up any problems with old ones.
section one-and-a-half: the files
---------------------------------
ssmzzz release 0.1 comes with the following files:
circles.ssm 6705 bytes (a module that puts tons of circles on your
screen)
waves.ssm 7725 bytes (a plasma cloud screensaver module)
readme 7189 bytes (that's this file!)
To install, just copy the *.ssm files into whatever directory you
keep your ScreenSaver modules in. The next time you load up
ScreenSaver, they will be loaded in automatically.
section two: disclaimer
-----------------------
Since this is a pre-release, I'm not going to say very much except
that I've only tested these on my system, and no one elses. So,
if your computer crashes, you lose your term paper, your heart
explodes, your wife falls off a cliff, or if something bad happens to
you, either directly or indirectly caused by these screen saver
modules, or something they had for breakfast, then that's just too
bad. If you use these modules, then you assume any risk that they may
or may not carry. If you don't like these terms, then delete these
files.
See somewhere below for the requirements for your continued use of
this product.
section three: module descriptions
----------------------------------
There are currently two modules:
circles.ssm: This one is called "Too Many Pills" and it creates
tiny (on my 1024x768 screen they're tiny, all you people who
actually can tolerate 640x480 might think they're relatively smallish-but-
not-quite-tiny-sized) little circlish pills that just keep on coming.
And that's it. Not terribly impressive, but it's colorful...
waves.ssm: "Strange Waves" takes a loooooong time to set up. I used
an algorithm I found floating around for a plasma cloud generator and
decided to make a screensaver module out of it while avoiding having to
do something useful with my life like study for a final or get drunk.
It plays with your palette to create those nifty floating colors and
stuff so if, when you quit, you think your screen looks funny, you're
right, it does. Just click on a folder (your desktop is a folder in
case you didn't know), or something, the colors will come back some day.
section pi: future screensaver modules
--------------------------------------
Am I going to write any more ScreenSaver modules in the future? YES!
In fact, some of my planned modules are:
* new plasma cloud ScreenSavers, or possibly one saver that randomly
picks one of several, depending on which people would prefer.
* the game of life ScreenSaver module. i'm fully aware someone has already
done one, but mine will be neato also, with lots of options.
* TOASTERS!!! my brother's Mac has toasters on his screen saver. that
made me truly jealous, so i'm going to plug a toaster up to my monitor
and see if i can make anything out of it.
* and some more, top secret, ones i can't discuss yet... =)
section four: the guy who made the modules
------------------------------------------
If you have anything to say about my ScreenSaver modules, then feel
free to e-harrass me at 'abaddon@camelot.bradley.edu'.
section five: requirements for continued legal use of this product
and other stuff you ought to read unless you want to go to court, assuming,
of course, that i find out you're using my product, without meeting the
requirements, which i probably won't, and probably wouldn't bother to
do anything about it even if i did
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah, these ScreenSaver modules are being distributed as readware.
That is, if you intend to use these ScreenSaver modules for longer than
four days, thirteen hours, and twenty four minutes, then you ***MUST***
e-mail me and ask me for a copy of my masterpiece, "Bill and the
Sadistic Squirrel." Once you have readistered your copy of ScreenSaver,
you may use any future "ssmzzz" package of ScreenSaver modules I
release without having to go through the arduous process of requesting
my story and subjugating yourself to the ghastly task of reading it.
If you continue to use my product despite these terms, then I won't
like you very much, you will feel very guilty, and I might be forced to
write something good for once that I can earn money off of, but then
release a demo of it and refuse to allow anyone to have it and when
they ask why I won't release it, I'll say "well, back when I released
'ssmzzz' I went through fifty-four versions but never got a single
readistration, so now I'm just going to spite you all, because you all
are lying, cheating scum and I'm quite satisfied being the only person
in the world with flying talking trippy toasters on my screen, thank you
very much. Go work for that Gallo guy who claimed to discover the
retrovirus that causes AIDS when it really was the French who did it.
You'd fit in well there. And, you know what?" To which everyone will,
of course, say "what?" and I will say: "I just wrote the Ultimate OS. It
does everything you want for half the price, and you don't even need to
change the sheets, but none of you can have it cuz no one readistered
for 'ssmzzz.'"
And I'll live the rest of my life dwelling on it and feeling miserable
and stuff because of you.
section six-six-six: distribution
---------------------------------
You may feel free to distribute these wherever you want, and if you can
earn money off of them, by all means do, as long as the .ssm modules are
in no way altered, and this "readme" file accompanies the .ssm modules
wherever they go. They're good friends, and you wouldn't want to be
responsible for separating them, would you? Now, while you may charge
money for the distribution of this software, it should not be in excess
of $5000 or so to cover shipping and fondling costs, as well as disk media
and all that other stuff you might want to charge money for. However,
if you find someone silly enough to pay more for this package, go ahead
and rip them off.
section seven: something for you to read on a rainy day
--------------------------------------------------------
'Placenta of Doom'
('Placenta of Doom' Copyright (c) 1993 by Lawrence McAlpin. All rights
reserved.)
placenta of doom
my mother's womb
a human tomb
i ripped at the walls
that caged me inside
my mother bled
and then she died
section eight: trademarks and other stuff
-----------------------------------------
Any and all trademarks referred to in this document are owned by whoever
owns the trademark.
section nine: you're still reading this?
