Klickstartmenu Version 1.0.414 (2026/07/27) Klickstartmenu is a configurable taskbar and Start menu for OS/2 and ArcaOS. ABOUT THE NAME The name "Klickstartmenu" is a deliberate reference to "Klickstartleiste", the term IBM used for the toolbar in the German version of OS/2. This characteristically unusual piece of IBM German has become part of the system's charm for many users. "Klickstartmenu" playfully continues that tradition while combining it with the familiar Start menu concept. COMPATIBILITY Klickstartmenu has mainly been tested under ArcaOS. Older OS/2 versions such as IBM OS/2 Warp 4 have not been tested extensively. Compatibility with these systems is therefore not guaranteed. If ACPiStat is not installed, no battery icon is shown and no battery polling is started. The Lock command first uses the XWorkplace lock object when available. If XWorkplace is not installed, Klickstartmenu falls back to the native OS/2 lockup function. INSTALLATION Extract all files into a directory of your choice and start startmenu.exe. Klickstartmenu stores its configuration files in the same directory. The program can be used without external bitmap files because the standard interface images are embedded in the executable. START MENU Open the Start menu by clicking the Start button. The fixed entries can include: * Programs * Documents * Settings * Search * Help * Run * Lock * Exit The Documents menu first shows the contents of the selected Documents folder. At the bottom it also contains submenus for recently used programs and folders and recently used documents. Right-click a fixed Start menu entry to open its context menu. Depending on the entry, this menu can be used to: * Open or refresh the associated folder * Copy the folder path * Select a different Programs or Documents folder * Return to automatic folder selection * Assign or remove a custom icon * Hide the entry Hidden fixed entries can be restored through: Start button context menu -> Menu entries Visible entries are checked in this submenu. For Documents, automatic folder selection uses the configured folder first, then HOME, then HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH. If these are unavailable, the Desktop folder is used as a fallback. START BUTTON CONTEXT MENU Right-click the Start button to configure Klickstartmenu. The menu contains settings for items such as: * Menu entries * Icons and images * Fonts * Language * Menu style and animations * Start button image * Taskbar restart and exit The Language submenu is shown as "Language" in English and with "/ Language" added in the other supported languages. KEYBOARD ACCESS AND PROGRAM OBJECTS The following command-line parameters can be assigned to Workplace Shell Program objects: startmenu.exe /startmenu Opens or closes the Start menu. startmenu.exe /run Opens or closes the Run window. startmenu.exe /lockup Locks the Desktop. The aliases /lock, -lock and -lockup are also accepted. If Klickstartmenu is already running, the command is forwarded to the existing instance instead of starting a second taskbar. ASSIGNING HOTKEYS UNDER ARCAOS 1. Create a new Program object on the Desktop or in a folder. 2. Enter the full path to startmenu.exe in the Program path field. 3. Enter one of the parameters in the Parameters field: /startmenu /run /lockup 4. Open the Program object's properties. 5. Assign the desired function key or keyboard shortcut. 6. Close the properties notebook and save the changes. For example, /startmenu can be assigned to the Windows key and /lockup to Windows+L, depending on the available hotkey support. RUN WINDOW The Run window starts programs, opens folders and accepts paths. Previously used entries are stored in the Run history. The window also supports completion for known entries. Press Enter to execute the current entry. Press Escape once to clear the input. Press Escape again while the input is empty to close the window. QUICK LAUNCH Klickstartmenu provides a left and a right Quick Launch area. Quick Launch objects can be opened with the mouse and reordered by drag and drop. A position marker indicates where the object will be inserted. The right Quick Launch area contains fixed functions such as Run, Recent items and Help Center. CUSTOM ICONS AND BITMAPS Klickstartmenu can be used without external bitmap files. Embedded images and Workplace Shell icons are used automatically. Custom BMP files can be assigned by drag and drop or through the appropriate context menus. To replace the vertical image on the left side of the Start menu, drag a BMP file onto the image area or use its context menu. To replace the Start button image, drag a BMP file onto the Start button or use: Start button context menu -> Icons and images Custom icons can also be assigned to the fixed Start menu entries, including Lock and Exit. Icons or bitmap images with a size of 32 x 32 pixels are recommended for individual Start menu entries. Assigned images are copied to the theme directory and recorded in theme.txt. RIGHT QUICK LAUNCH ICONS The fixed icons in the right Quick Launch area can be replaced with custom BMP files. Place the desired BMP files in the same directory as the executable. The following filenames are used for the normal icon size: * run.bmp - Run * recent.bmp - Recent items * help.bmp - Help Center For large icons in the right Quick Launch area, separate 32 x 32 pixel bitmaps can be provided using the following filenames: * 32run.bmp - Run * 32recent.bmp - Recent items * 32help.bmp - Help Center When large icons are enabled, Klickstartmenu first tries to load the corresponding 32-prefixed file. If it is missing or cannot be loaded, the program falls back to the normal BMP file and then to the embedded or Workplace Shell fallback icon. Restart Klickstartmenu after adding or replacing one of these files. TRAY ICONS The standard tray icons are embedded in the executable. Optional external BMP files next to the executable can override embedded icons. Depending on the function, separate bitmap files may be used for Volume, Display, Network activity and Battery status. If ACPiStat is unavailable, the battery icon is omitted automatically. VERTICAL START MENU BITMAP TEMPLATE An OpenOffice Draw file is included as a template for creating the vertical Start menu bitmap. To export the finished bitmap: 1. Open the template in OpenOffice Draw. 2. Edit the text and design as required. 3. Select the complete vertical design with the mouse. 4. Open the File menu and select Export. 5. Enable Selection in the export window. 6. Select BMP as the file format. 7. Choose a filename and export the image. 8. Drag the exported BMP file onto the vertical image area of the Start menu. Enabling Selection ensures that only the selected design is exported instead of the complete Draw page. LICENSE Freeware This program may be used free of charge. Aeltere OS/2-Versionen wie IBM OS/2 Warp 4 wurden bisher nicht umfassend getestet. Eine Kompatibilitaet mit diesen Systemen kann daher nicht garantiert werden. Ist ACPiStat nicht installiert, wird kein Batteriesymbol angezeigt und keine Batterieabfrage gestartet. Der Eintrag Sperren verwendet zuerst das Sperrobjekt von XWorkplace. Ist XWorkplace nicht installiert, wird automatisch die native OS/2-Sperrfunktion verwendet. INSTALLATION Alle Dateien in ein Verzeichnis nach Wahl entpacken und startmenu.exe starten. Klickstartmenu speichert seine Konfigurationsdateien im selben Verzeichnis. Das Programm kann ohne externe Bitmapdateien verwendet werden, da die Standardbilder in die EXE eingebettet sind. STARTMENUE Das Startmenue wird durch einen Klick auf den Startbutton geoeffnet. Die festen Eintraege koennen enthalten: * Programme * Dokumente * Einstellungen * Suchen * Hilfe * Ausfuehren * Sperren * Beenden Das Dokumente-Menue zeigt zuerst den Inhalt des ausgewaehlten Dokumentenordners. Darunter befinden sich zusaetzlich Untermenues fuer zuletzt benutzte Programme und Ordner sowie zuletzt benutzte Dokumente. Mit einem Rechtsklick auf einen festen Startmenueeintrag wird dessen Kontextmenue geoeffnet. Je nach Eintrag stehen dort folgende Funktionen zur Verfuegung: * Zugehoerigen Ordner oeffnen oder aktualisieren * Ordnerpfad kopieren * Einen anderen Programme- oder Dokumentenordner auswaehlen * Zur automatischen Ordnerwahl zurueckkehren * Ein eigenes Symbol zuweisen oder entfernen * Den Eintrag ausblenden Ausgeblendete feste Eintraege koennen wieder aktiviert werden ueber: Kontextmenue des Startbuttons -> Menueeintraege Sichtbare Eintraege sind in diesem Untermenue mit einem Haken markiert. Fuer Dokumente verwendet die automatische Ordnerwahl zuerst den eingestellten Ordner, danach HOME und anschliessend HOMEDRIVE zusammen mit HOMEPATH. Sind diese Angaben nicht vorhanden, wird die Arbeitsoberflaeche als Fallback verwendet. KONTEXTMENUE DES STARTBUTTONS Mit einem Rechtsklick auf den Startbutton wird Klickstartmenu konfiguriert. Das Menue enthaelt unter anderem Einstellungen fuer: * Menueeintraege * Symbole und Bilder * Schriftarten * Sprache * Menueart und Animationen * Startbuttonbild * Neustart und Beenden der Taskleiste Das Sprachmenue heisst auf Englisch "Language". In den anderen unterstuetzten Sprachen steht zusaetzlich "/ Language" daneben. TASTATURZUGRIFF UND PROGRAMMOBJEKTE Folgende Kommandozeilenparameter koennen Workplace-Shell-Programmobjekten zugewiesen werden: startmenu.exe /startmenu Oeffnet oder schliesst das Startmenue. startmenu.exe /run Oeffnet oder schliesst das Ausfuehren-Fenster. startmenu.exe /lockup Sperrt die Arbeitsoberflaeche. Zusaetzlich werden die Aliase /lock, -lock und -lockup akzeptiert. Laeuft Klickstartmenu bereits, wird der Befehl an die vorhandene Instanz weitergereicht. Es wird keine zweite Taskleiste gestartet. HOTKEYS UNTER ARCAOS ZUWEISEN 1. Ein neues Programmobjekt auf der Arbeitsoberflaeche oder in einem Ordner erstellen. 2. Im Feld Programmpfad den vollstaendigen Pfad zu startmenu.exe eintragen. 3. Im Feld Parameter einen der folgenden Werte eintragen: /startmenu /run /lockup 4. Die Merkmale des Programmobjekts oeffnen. 5. Die gewuenschte Funktionstaste oder Tastenkombination zuweisen. 6. Das Merkmalsnotizbuch schliessen und die Aenderungen speichern. Je nach vorhandener Hotkey-Unterstuetzung kann beispielsweise /startmenu der Windows-Taste und /lockup der Kombination Windows+L zugewiesen werden. AUSFUEHREN-FENSTER Das Ausfuehren-Fenster startet Programme, oeffnet Ordner und verarbeitet Pfadangaben. Bereits verwendete Eintraege werden im Verlauf gespeichert. Das Fenster unterstuetzt ausserdem die Vervollstaendigung bekannter Eintraege. Mit Enter wird der aktuelle Eintrag ausgefuehrt. Escape leert beim ersten Druecken die Eingabe. Ist die Eingabe bereits leer, schliesst ein weiteres Druecken von Escape das Fenster. SCHNELLSTARTLEISTEN Klickstartmenu besitzt eine linke und eine rechte Schnellstartleiste. Schnellstartobjekte koennen mit der Maus geoeffnet und per Drag-and-drop verschoben werden. Eine Positionsmarkierung zeigt an, an welcher Stelle das Objekt eingefuegt wird. Die rechte Schnellstartleiste enthaelt feste Funktionen wie Ausfuehren, Zuletzt benutzte Eintraege und Hilfezentrum. EIGENE SYMBOLE UND BITMAPS Klickstartmenu kann ohne externe Bitmapdateien verwendet werden. Eingebettete Bilder und Workplace-Shell-Symbole werden automatisch benutzt. Eigene BMP-Dateien koennen per Drag-and-drop oder ueber die jeweiligen Kontextmenues zugewiesen werden. Um das vertikale Bild auf der linken Seite des Startmenues zu ersetzen, eine BMP-Datei auf den Bildbereich ziehen oder dessen Kontextmenue verwenden. Das Startbuttonbild kann per Drag-and-drop oder ueber folgenden Menuepfad ersetzt werden: Kontextmenue des Startbuttons -> Symbole und Bilder Auch den festen Startmenueeintraegen einschliesslich Sperren und Beenden koennen eigene Symbole zugewiesen werden. Fuer einzelne Startmenueeintraege werden Symbole oder Bitmapbilder mit einer Groesse von 32 x 32 Pixeln empfohlen. Zugewiesene Bilder werden in das Theme-Verzeichnis kopiert und in theme.txt eingetragen. SYMBOLE DER RECHTEN SCHNELLSTARTLEISTE Die festen Symbole in der rechten Schnellstartleiste koennen durch eigene BMP-Dateien ersetzt werden. Die gewuenschten BMP-Dateien muessen im selben Verzeichnis wie die EXE liegen. Fuer die normale Symbolgroesse werden folgende Dateinamen verwendet: * run.bmp - Ausfuehren * recent.bmp - Zuletzt benutzte Eintraege * help.bmp - Hilfezentrum Fuer grosse Symbole der rechten Schnellstartleiste koennen zusaetzlich eigene 32-x-32-Pixel-Bitmaps mit folgenden Dateinamen bereitgestellt werden: * 32run.bmp - Ausfuehren * 32recent.bmp - Zuletzt benutzte Eintraege * 32help.bmp - Hilfezentrum Ist die grosse Darstellung aktiviert, versucht Klickstartmenu zuerst die entsprechende 32er-Datei zu laden. Fehlt sie oder kann sie nicht geladen werden, wird auf die normale BMP-Datei und anschliessend auf das eingebettete Symbol oder das Workplace-Shell-Fallback zurueckgegriffen. Klickstartmenu nach dem Hinzufuegen oder Ersetzen einer dieser Dateien neu starten. TRAYSYMBOLE Die Standard-Traysymbole sind in die EXE eingebettet. Optionale externe BMP-Dateien neben der EXE koennen die eingebetteten Symbole ueberschreiben. Je nach Funktion koennen getrennte Bitmapdateien fuer Lautstaerke, Anzeige, Netzwerkaktivitaet und Batteriestatus verwendet werden. Ist ACPiStat nicht vorhanden, wird das Batteriesymbol automatisch weggelassen. VORLAGE FUER DAS VERTIKALE STARTMENUEBILD Eine OpenOffice-Draw-Datei ist als Vorlage fuer das vertikale Startmenuebild enthalten. So wird das fertige Bitmap exportiert: 1. Die Vorlage in OpenOffice Draw oeffnen. 2. Text und Gestaltung nach Wunsch bearbeiten. 3. Das vollstaendige vertikale Motiv mit der Maus markieren. 4. Das Menue Datei oeffnen und Exportieren waehlen. 5. Im Exportfenster Auswahl aktivieren. 6. BMP als Dateiformat auswaehlen. 7. Einen Dateinamen festlegen und das Bild exportieren. 8. Die exportierte BMP-Datei auf den vertikalen Bildbereich des Startmenues ziehen. Durch die Option Auswahl wird nur das markierte Motiv exportiert und nicht die vollstaendige Draw-Seite. LIZENZ Freeware Dieses Programm darf kostenlos verwendet werden. Die unveraenderte Originaldatei darf weitergegeben werden. Das Programm wird ohne jede Gewaehrleistung bereitgestellt.
