Alternative 2.X VIO Fonts
-------------------------
Released to DAPTOOLS February 1994
Released to OS2TOOLS December 1993
Alternative 2.x VIO fonts for VGA and BGA (8514/A) adapters. These
fonts are used in OS/2 Windows (and DOS Windows) and in Comms Manager
3270 emulator windows.
| VIO fonts have a fixed character size, height and width. They are
| the only fonts used in OS/2 Windows including 3270 emulator windows.
| In OS/2 2.1 at least (can't remember for 2.0) any application which
| has a font selection dialog will allow you to select VIO fonts as
| well as various other fonts.
FEEDBACK
--------
General feedback preferred to RESED FORUM but also by NOTE to me.
WHAT ARE YOU GETTING ?
----------------------
Alternative VIO fonts tested with OS/2 2.0 GA and OS/2 2.1 GA.
Not tested with 2.0 Service Pak (don't have access).
You get the fonts themselves (which you don't need unless you plan to
modify them) plus the fonts packaged for use in 2.0 GA and 2.1 as DLLs.
2 pixel upright x8 fonts are redrawn with single pixel uprights.
All other fonts have some characters redrawn, including slashing
all zeroes.
All fonts have all 383 glyphs (some 2.0 GA fonts as shipped had only
316 or 331 glyphs) and are based on those in the OS/2 2.1 May 93 Beta
DSPRES.DLL for VGA and BGA (they are identical).
INSTALL
-------
All VIO fonts for 2.x are in a DLL. You cannot replace this DLL while
the system is running. The DLL for 2.0 GA is called DISPLAY.DLL, for
2.1 is called DSPRES.DLL.
Unzip the appropriate file for your system into a temporary or user
(not OS/2 system) directory :
VGA20.ZIP for 2.0 GA with VGA display
BGA20.ZIP for 2.0 GA with BGA (8514/A) display
BVGA21.ZIP for 2.1 with VGA or BGA (8514/A) display
Rename the output file DISPLAY.DLL (2.0 GA) or DSPRES.DLL (2.1). **
Shutdown your OS/2 system and boot a different operating system to
be able to replace the DLL. You can boot a different operating system
by use of Boot Manager or Dual Boot or diskette.
Rename or copy the current DISPLAY.DLL (2.0 GA) or DSPRES.DLL (2.1)
to *.DLO in your boot-drive:\OS2\DLL (where \ is backslash) directory
so as to have a fall-back if the following goes wrong ! ***
Now copy or move the file from ** above to the \OS2\DLL directory.
Shutdown the operating system you are now using. Reboot your OS/2
system. You should now be using my fonts. If your system does not
reboot successfully, go back to the other operating system and
copy/rename your original DLL file back to what it was. Then reboot
again to get back to your original OS/2 VIO fonts.
| THE FONT FILES
| --------------
| These are for use by anyone who wants to modify the fonts, and they
| are supplied as a convenience so you don't have to extract them
| yourself. You will need the Toolkit Font Editor (FONTEDIT.EXE) and
| a DLL manipulation tool. I used APL2OS2 (see below). Now available
| as well is READER from OS2TOOLS. I have not used READER.
| OTHER OS/2 FONTS
| ----------------
| Most other OS/2 fonts are NOT stored in the DLL, and playing with
| VIO fonts will have no effect on them (that is Courier, Helvetica etc).
THANKS
------
To Ron Wilks for APL2OS2 PACKAGE from APLTOOLS which I used
in conjunction with FONTEDIT from the 2.1 Beta Toolkit to massage
and replace fonts.
DISCLAIMER
----------
I don't have access to an XGA or SVGA system, but I believe from the
2.0 Service Pak on, they use a common DSPRES.DLL with VGA and BGA, so it
should work. No joy for XGA/SVGA 2.0 users though. I also believe a 2.1
DSPRES.DLL should work in a 2.0 Service Pak system for VGA and BGA.
HISTORY
-------
This package was distributed from May 1993 to December 1993 by me on
REQUEST. The only change in the version on OS2TOOLS is the inclusion
of the font files as well.
1.0a - expand this ANNOUNCE file, improve descriptions in PACKAGE file.
1.0b - expand this ANNOUNCE file some more, improve descriptions in
PACKAGE file.
