Nutrition Database v. 5.5 (9/1/2001) Readme/What's new
NUT for OS/2 - Version 5.5 -Program description Nut 5.5 is a VIO mode application for OS/2. Nut allows you to record what you eat and analyze your meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 13, which contains 6,210 foods. For a more exaustive guide of NUT look at README file. -Installation notes This port of NUT just requires at least EMX 0.9d runtime installed to run. If you already have EMX installed, you don't need to modify your Config.sys file. To install you just have to unzip the package with the -d switch (to expand exactly the tree) in the directory you'll run NUT from. You can give to NUT directory any name you like, but you have to be sure there's a /nutdb subdirectory into. Start "install.cmd" by double clicking on its icon or in a prompt session. This will create on your desktop a folder with inside NUT program object, and other things. The first time you'll run NUT you'll read this : "Please Wait - Nut 5.5 for OS/2 : creating the food database "nutdb/food.db"..." During this process NUT is creating its indexed database and after this you'll be able to work with NUT. Now you have three new files in /nutdb subdirectory (food.db, meal.db and options.db) and from the main menu you can start using NUT. If you have hard disk space problems you can remove "abbrev.txt" file from /nutdb subdirectory now. I've compiled and tested NUT only on Warp 4.5 (fixpack 14), but it should run with version 3 too with the last EMX runtime available. (Check it on Hobbes). -Problems and bugs I've tried to solve any bug I've experienced on my system. As for the build 1.1 from the 4th Unix version I removed any HOME variable reference from source code, so XFree/2 users won't find problems running NUT 5.5. Still the database creation on the first run hangs a bit your system, but just wait till the end of the process (45 seconds on my IBM 6x86L 200) to have your OS/2 system as fast as usual ! ;-) Remember that this problem appears just once, because once created the food database Nut doesn't need to recreate at every startup. -New with this build The 5.5 version manages new entries in USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 13 (previous version was based on Release 12). It means that you'll find some new elements (Omega-6, Omega-3, ALA, EPA, DHA) and some removed (Linoleic. Linolenic). New database release contains 6210 foods vs 5976 of previous one, but I've found that the new executable takes less time to generate the indexed database in the first time startup. Then there are some minor changes to menu dialogs but you'll find NUT 5.5 very easy to learn and use. -Future plans None at the moment. I'd like to build a nice PM app around NUT source code, but I haven't enough time and programming knowledge to do :-(( I'm not sure at the moment, but I'm thinking about create a WPI Installer based distribution of NUT, instead of this classic ZIP based one...tell me if you're interested ! ;-) -License and conditions of use This program is Free ! You don't have to pay to use it. Anyway I'd like to receive a postcard from your city if you'll decide to use and you'll find it useful :-) Under no circumstances the author is liable for any LOSS OR DAMAGE. You are FREE TO USE this version of the program on as many machines as you like. You are FREE TO DISTRIBUTE the program provided that you include all the files in the archive without any modification. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SELL THE PROGRAM, but can charge a reasonable amount to cover the cost of the distribution media. For further details about the GPL license read the LICENSE file included. -Greetings I would like to thank here everybody who downloaded previous version of this application and sent me a lot of very nice postcards ! :-) Continue to send ! ;-) ENJOY NUT/2 !!! and SUPPORT OS/2 !!!
