Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) Technology support for OS/2 README Contents -------- 1.0 Prerequisite Support 2.0 Installation Instructions 3.0 Uninstall Instructions 4.0 Hardware Considerations 5.0 Operating Parameters 6.0 Enhanced Suspend Support 7.0 Additional CPU and Throttle States Overview Support 8.0 Trademarks 1.0 PREREQUISITE SUPPORT ------------------------ In order to install the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) technology support for OS/2 you must first install the Advanced Power Management (APM) feature on your OS/2 system. If you do not already have the Advanced Power Management feature installed on your system, you can install it through the OS/2 Selective Install process. Latest OS2 Loader package from DDPAK should be applied on your system prior to installing the Enhanced Speedstep support package 2.0 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------------ The OS2SPDST.EXE file that you received contains the following files in a self-extracting format: - GSVINST.EXE Executable that installs your SpeedStep support - APM.SYS SpeedStep device driver - README.TXT This file that you are reading - WPCONFIG.DLL WorkPlace Shell functional DLL In addition, there are language-specific subdirectories that contain the following files: - GSVDAEMN.EXE SpeedStep Daemon executable that performs CPU state changes. - WPCONMRI.DLL WorkPlace Shell informational DLL - WPGSVPWR.HLP SpeedStep Help Library This installation package supports all languages supported for OS/2 Warp 4.0. To use these OS/2 SpeedStep driver files, you must expand the OS2SPDST.EXE file into its component files by: (a.) opening an OS/2 command prompt (window or full screen, full screen recommended) on your computer, (b.) type "OS2SPDST.EXE -d" at the command prompt. Once the OS2SPDST.EXE file is expanded, continue with the installation instructions. 1. Open an OS/2 full screen command prompt on your computer. 2. Change your directory to the directory containing the SpeedStep files that were just expanded. As an example, type A: if you are installing the driver from the A: drive diskette. 3. At the OS/2 command prompt, type GSVINST. This command will: (a.) Verify that the OS/2 version on the boot partition is at one of the following levels: Convenience Pack 1, with FixPak C1-2 or above Convenience Pack 2, with no FixPak or FixPak C2-1 or above Convenience Pack 2 Refresh, with no FixPak or FixPak C2-1 or above If this is not the case, then this installation will stop. (b.) Save the existing Advanced Power Management driver as APM.SAV in the OS2\BOOT directory on the boot partition. (c.) Add the new APM.SYS device driver in the OS2\BOOT directory on the boot partition. (d.) Save the existing SpeedStep daemon as GSVDAEMN.SAV in the OS2\BOOT directory on the boot partition. (e.) Add the new language specific GSVDAEMN.EXE SpeedStep daemon in the OS2\BOOT directory on the boot partition. (f.) Save the existing WorkPlace Shell DLLs as WPCONFIG.SAV WPCONMRI.SAV in the OS2\DLL directory on the boot partition. (g.) Add the associated language specific WorkPlace Shell DLL (WPCONMRI.DLL) to the OS2\DLL directory on the boot partition. (h.) Add the associated language independent WorkPlace Shell DLL (WPCONFIG.DLL) to the OS2\DLL directory on the boot partition. (i.) Save the existing SpeedStep Help Library (if any) as WPGSVPWR.SAV in the OS2\HELP directory on the boot partition. (j.) Add the associated language specific SpeedStep Help Library to the OS2\HELP directory on the boot (k.) Initialize the .INI file to contain default values for the SpeedStep fields. 4. This completes the installation procedure. You should examine the install log (GSVINST.LOG) to verify that the installation was successful. After Installation your computer must be rebooted to allow the new settings and device driver(s) to take effect. 3.0 UNINSTALL INSTRUCTIONS --------------------------- The GSVINST.EXE program creates a log file called GSVINST.LOG. This log file contains information about which files have been changed and where the original files have been backed up. Uninstallation of this package, if required, must be done manually by examining the GSVINST.LOG file and copying the backup files one by one to the original location. You can open an OS/2 command prompt window or fullscreen, change the current drive to be the target partition and do the following commands: COPY \OS2\BOOT\APM.SAV \OS2\BOOT\APM.SYS COPY \OS2\DLL\WPCONFIG.SAV \OS2\DLL\WPCONFIG.DLL COPY \OS2\DLL\WPCONMRI.SAV \OS2\DLL\WPCONMRI.DLL COPY \OS2\HELP\WPGSVPWR.SAV \OS2\HELP\WPGSVPWR.HLP COPY \OS2\BOOT\GSVDAEMN.SAV \OS2\BOOT\GSVDAEMN.EXE If there are any error messages as a result of these commands, it could be because the original file was not there before the install. You should check the GSVINST.LOG file to verify whether that was the reason. The GSVINST.EXE backup method does not consider multiple successive installations. If you intend to be able to simply uninstall this package after multiple successive installations, then you will need to do an uninstall in between each pair of installs, or revise this uninstall method to create your own more comprehensive uninstall method. 4.0 HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS --------------------------- This driver can be installed on a computer which does not have the Intel SpeedStep(R) technology, or Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) technology, and it will not have any effect on the computer's processor mode. 5.0 OPERATING PARAMETERS ------------------------------------------------------ Intel(R) has introduced dual-mode mobile processor technologies, known as Intel SpeedStep(R) technology and Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) technology, that lets a mobile computer to operate at a higher frequency (that is, "Maximum Performance") when plugged into a wall outlet and automatically switch to a lower power and frequency (that is, "Battery Optimized Performance") when running on battery, conserving battery life. A settings page named "Performance" has been added to the WorkPlace Power object. You can view the current SpeedStep performance mode by selecting the Power icon in your System Setup folder and pressing the left mouse button to display the "Power - Full status" panel. You can access the SpeedStep Technology Properties by selecting the icon in the upper left hand corner of the "Power - Full status" panel, depressing the right mouse button, and then selecting Properties from the pop-up menu. The SpeedStep Technology Properties are on the "Performance" page. Checking the "Disable Power and Performance Optimization control" box disables the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) technology support for OS/2. In certain cases, unchecking this box will not immediately re-enable the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep(R) technology support for OS/2. In these cases, to re-enable the SpeedStep Technology Device Driver for OS/2, after unchecking this box, you must shutdown OS/2, enter the BIOS Setup, and re-enable the SpeedStep Technology in the BIOS, and then reboot OS/2. Checking the "Automatically change performance when the power source changes" box causes the SpeedStep Technology daemon for OS/2 to change processor modes when the power source changes from batteries to a wall outlet or from a wall outlet to batteries. The processor mode used as the new state depends on the selection made from the applicable pull-down menu (as described below). If the "Automatically change performance when the power source changes" box is checked, then checking the "Ask me before automatically changing performance" box causes the SpeedStep Technology daemon for OS/2 to request confirmation before changing processor modes when the power source changes from batteries to a wall outlet or from a wall outlet to batteries. If the "Automatically change performance when the power source changes" box is checked, then checking the "Disable audio notification when performance changes." box causes the SpeedStep Technology daemon for OS/2 not to issue its audible notification when the processor mode changes automatically due to a change in the power source. You can select the SpeedStep processor mode for use when the computer is powered by batteries from the "Running on Batteries" pull-down menu. This mode is used when the computer is restarted while powered by batteries. In addition, if the "Automatically change performance when the power source changes" box is checked, the mode selected is used whenever the power source for the computer changes from wall outlet to batteries. You can select the SpeedStep mode to use when the computer is powered from a wall outlet from the "Plugged in" pull-down menu. This mode is used when the computer is restarted while powered from a wall outlet. In addition, if the "Automatically change performance when the power source changes" box is checked, the mode selected is used whenever the power source for the computer changes from batteries to a wall outlet. 6.0 ENHANCED SUSPEND SUPPORT ----------------------------- Changes in the power saving technology has enabled the system to turn off the power to the display adapter memory during system suspend. This type of suspend is called a D3 Cold suspend state. Because of this technology, the video display information is no longer preserved from a suspend to a resume as it once was, and instead the memory gradually goes to a random pattern or all black state while suspended. The effect varies in it's completeness depending on the length of time the system stays suspended and the type of refreshing normally required for the memory to preserve its state. The enclosed software implements a new, optional, OS/2 feature called Enhanced Suspend, designed to allow the system to refresh the display once the system is resumed from a D3 Cold suspend state. The Enhanced Suspend option should be enabled on a system with D3 Cold suspend enabled, if there is insufficient, disabled, or no BIOS assistence for restoring the video state once the system is resumed. On other systems, or in other circumstances, Enhanced Suspend may also be optionally enabled, if desired. To control the Enhanced Suspend feature, the following statement should be used in the CONFIG.SYS file. SET ENH_SUSPEND=<value> where <value> is one of the following: 0 - the Enhanced Suspend is disabled, same as no "SET ENH_SUSPEND" statement in the CONFIG.SYS; 1 - basic Enhanced Suspend is enabled; 2 - same as "1" plus saving/restoration of the graphics mode screen. SET ENH_SUSPEND=1 should be satisfactory in most cases, and requires the minimum of additional memory at the time of a suspend. However, there are circumstances such as a lockup desktop, or a PM Popup, where relatively unimportant video display content remains temporarily corrupted until the lockup or Popup is ended. SET ENH_SUSPEND=2 requires additional memory to save and restore the exact the desktop bit pattern fairly immediately. It may yield results similar to SET ENH_SUSPEND=1 if system memory or virtual address space is in short supply at the time of the suspend. Once Enhanced Suspend is enabled, there is a noticable difference in the suspending and resuming. Unlike when disabled, at the start of a suspend, the system usually changes to a text mode and displays a suspending message, and upon a resume, a resuming message is displayed. All the hardware drivers are readied, before the original display information is restored. So unlike when disabled, once the original display information is restored, you can begin all normal operations like keyboard and mouse input immediately, and the system should be more responsive to those operations. For this reason, it may be desirable to enable Enhanced Suspend, even when the system does not use D3 Cold state for suspend. There are some system states for which the Enhanced Suspend support requires a newer version of display driver to avoid display corruption upon resume from a D3 Cold suspend state. So we recommend that you also upgrade the video driver, to one claiming support for Enhanced Suspend, for any system on which you enable Enhanced Suspend. The latest SciTech SNAP, IBMGRADD, and VGA/SVGA drivers have support for Enhanced Suspend. 7.0 ADDITIONAL CPU AND THROTTLE STATES OVERVIEW SUPPORT ------------------------------------------------------ To maximize battery life and optimize performance on the new mobile Pentium processors, additional CPU and Throttle states have been introduced. The number of CPU states depends on the processor model and maximum frequency. It is possible to enable the overview of the CPU and Throttle states in the Power object. To control the states overview, the following statement should be used in the CONFIG.SYS file. SET SHOWEXTENDEDPOWERMENU=<value> where <value> is one of the following: NO - the states overview are disabled, same as no "SET SHOWEXTENDEDPOWERMENU" statement in the CONFIG.SYS; (this is the default option); YES - the states overview are enabled. Note: extended power state information is shown in English only. 8.0 COPYRIGHT AND TRADEMARK INFORMATION ---------------------------------------- The following terms are trademarks of International Business Machines Corporation in the United States, other countries, or both.
