FAAC (Freeware Advanced Audio (AAC) Decoder) is a codec for AAC audio formats.

The AAC format is a lossy encoding format audio files (ie with loss of quality) rival of the popular MP3.

It was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute - creator of' MP3 - with the aim of achieving maximum efficiency, reducing the size of the audio tracks on the one hand and improving the quality of play on the other.

This format has several advantages than MP3, since it introduces very advanced technologies including:

  • CHANNEL SURROUND
  • HUFFMAN CODING
  • COUPLING
  • PREDICTION
  • QUANTIZATION and NOISE CONTROL LOOP
  • SBR (Spectral Band Replication)
  • BITSTREAM MULTIPLEXING
